Palestinians condemn Israeli law for punishing children

Palestinian Foreign Ministry on Monday denounced a new Israeli law that allows imprisonment of children under 14 years old.

The ministry said in an emailed press statement that this law "is unprecedented in the world and contradicts the universal bill of children's rights".

The statement added that the Israeli army's operations targeting Palestinian children constitute war crimes against humanity.

The ministry called on human right groups to promptly uncover the law and its threats to Palestinian children, and urged the international community to condemn it for being a "racist law".

An Israeli legislative committee on Sunday approved an amendment to allow courts to sentence children under 14 years old.

Israeli media reported that the Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked championed the amendment for "deference", after stabbing or vehicular attacks carried out by Palestinians against Israelis.

A recent wave of tensions broke out in last October, killing over 200 Palestinians and at 30 Israelis. Endit
