Macedonian Parliament voted on Monday to extend the state of emergency enforced in the areas on the southern and northern borders until Dec. 31, 2016 as a result of the migrant crisis.
Addressing parliament, Macedonia Minister of Defense Zoran Jolevski stated that the motion on amending the decision approving an extension of the state of emergency came as a result of the growing number of migrants entering and passing through Macedonia.
"The objective of this decision is to secure continuity of the execution of tasks by the army and security forces of the Macedonian Interior Ministry in an attempt to guard and protect the state border," he added.
The member of parliament from VMRO-DPMNE Vlatko Gjorcev in his speech welcomed the decision underlining that "engagement of members of the army and security forces on the southern and northern border is necessary because of the scope of the (migrant) crisis."
A 30-day state of emergency on the southern and northern border was declared by the Macedonian government due to the migrant crisis in August 2015. Later this measure was extended until June 15, 2016. Enditem
