Latvian president recovers from heart surgery, to return to work next week

Xinhua, March 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis, who has recovered from a heart surgery he underwent three months ago, is set to resume his presidential duties on March 30.

Vejonis on Wednesday issued a statement informing that he is returning to work next week.

Vejonis is also going to give a news conference at his seaside residence in Jurmala on March 30 and has called a meeting of the National Security Council in April.

The Latvian president met with Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis on Wednesday to discuss Latvia's ongoing accession talks with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the security situation in Latvia in the wake of Tuesday's deadly terror attacks in Brussels.

The president's spokeswoman Kristine Jaunzeme said that Vejonis continues to improve his health in line with medics' recommendations and is working at his Jurmala residence.

On Jan. 20, Vejonis underwent a heart surgery. During the surgery, the president's heart valve, which was affected by septic infection, was replaced with a prosthetic one. Endit
