Suspected suicide bombers in Brussels attacks identified: report

Xinhua, March 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Two suicide bombers who set off bombs in Brussels on Tuesday have been identified as Khalid and Brahim El Bakraoui, Belgian broadcaster RTBF reported on Wednesday, citing police sources.

Brahim El Bakraoui was the suicide bomber in the attack against Brussels airport, while the other brother, Khalid carried out the explosion at Maelbeek station, RTBF reported.

However, the Belgian broadcaster in an earlier report Wednesday morning said both brothers were suicide bombers in the airport attack.

The brothers, aged 27 and 30 respectively, were wanted by police in connection with the Paris terror attacks and could have been the two people who fled the scene of a police raid in the Brussels district of Forest last week, RTBF added.

Both men were known to police for previous offences, according to RTBF. Ibrahim El Bakraoui was jailed in 2010 for firing a kalashnikov at police in Brussels after an armed raid on a bureau de change. His brother Khalim received a five-year suspended prison sentence in 2011 for car-jackings. Enditem
