Madagascar celebrates World Water Day in driest southern area

Xinhua, March 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Madagascar celebrated the World Water Day on Tuesday under the theme "Better water, better jobs."

The Minister of Water Johanita Ndahimanajara said during the celebration that only 43 percent of Malagasy people have access to drinking water that's why it is important to install more infrastructures to supply drinking water for the population.

The minister announced the government project to install 400 water pumps in the driest southern area of Madagascar.

Data from the ministry of population said that about 600,000 people were victims of hunger since early this year because of repetitive drought in southern Madagascar.

A senior journalist Maka Alphonse told Xinhua that the southern part of the country is victim of repetitive drought because of lack of policy from the government.

"We have many water sources underground and many rivers nearby but no infrastructure to lead these waters to the driest areas was done," Maka Alphonse said.

Data from the Ministry of Water said that Madagascar is ranked as the forth country in the world having the lowest rate in access to drinking water. Enditem
