Strasbourg mayor says Brussels explosions attack European symbols

Mayor of Strasbourg Roland Ries shared his support on Tuesday for Brussels following deadly terrorist attacks that struck the Belgian capital's airport and a metro station Tuesday morning.

"Beyond people themselves, it is today one of the symbols of Europe which has been attacked," declared Roland Ries in a statement.

"This new blow against liberty is intolerable," insisted the socialist head of Strasbourg, the Alsatian capital which is home to several European institutions such as the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights.

"Democracy, like human rights, are the fundamental values that Strasbourg will continue to uphold with strength alongside Brussels," Ries underlined in expressing his support and solidarity with the Mayor of Brussels, Yvan Mayeur.

Following the terrorist attacks in Brussels, the police and military apparatus around the European institutions based in the Alsatian capital were reinforced. Enditem
