Foreign envoys in Istanbul show solidarity against terrorism

Xinhua, March 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Top envoys of some countries in Istanbul on Tuesday joined a solidarity march in the street where a suicide bombing attack left five dead three days ago.

Marching with mayors of several municipalities of Istanbul in Istiklal Street, where a man blew himself up on Saturday killing four foreigners and injuring 36 others, the 19 consuls general appealed to the world to unite and stand arm in arm against terrorism.

Shai Cohen, Israel's consul general, said the world must stand united as terrorism targets humanity. "The world should fight against terrorism in unity," added U.S. Consul General Charles Hunter.

The envoys and mayors later visited the Belgian consulate general to offer their condolences over a series of deadly attacks that hit Brussels, Belgium's capital, earlier in the day and killed at least 34 people.

"Terrorism is a worldwide threat," said Henri Vantieghem, the Belgian consul general, as he welcomed his guests at the entrance of the consulate.

Referring to the two Israeli-Americans, an Israeli and an Iranian citizen who lost their lives in the attack in Istiklal Street, Vantieghem noted, "All the countries are threatened by this horror of terrorism."

On Tuesday two explosions rocked Brussels' main international airport and another hit a metro station close to the European Union institutions. Endit
