Sydney traffic worse than New York's: survey

Xinhua, March 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sydney's traffic is worse than that of New York, according to a survey released on Tuesday.

The international TomTom Traffic Index 2016 found that those living in Sydney spent an extra 151 hours waiting in traffic, making it the most congested city in the nation.

New South Wales (NSW) state Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance agreed that congestion has got Sydneysiders by the throat.

"It's why we're getting on with building the biggest road and rail projects in the country," Constance said.

"The NSW Government has a massive infrastructure pipeline, we're investing 68.6 billion Australian dollars (52.06 billion U.S. dollars) over the next four years, to make our state a better place to live, visit and do business."

TomTom Asia Pacific vice-president Chris Kearney told AAP traffic could be reduced if drivers took collective measures.

"If even just 5 percent of us changed our travel plans, we would improve travel times on our major highways by up to 30 percent," Kearney said.

Sydney ranked 21st in the global index, while Melbourne was ranked 75th making it Australia's second most congested city. Endit
