Zambian leader swears in Constitutional Court judges

Xinhua, March 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Monday swore in five judges to preside over the Constitutional Court to interpret the clauses of the new constitution.

Lungu said at the ceremony that the judges are responsible for dealing with contentious issues emerging since the amended constitution took effect in early January.

The government will make all efforts to ensure the smooth operation of the court to guarantee social justice, especially when the country is heading for general elections later this year, Lungu said.

According to the amended constitution, Zambia will hold tripartite elections on Aug. 11 to choose a president, lawmakers and councilors.

The court is expected to be busy during the election time as a number of constitutional disputes will arise, the president added. Endi
