The Danish women's national handball team failed to qualify for the upcoming Rio Olympics after suffering a 22-26 defeat to Montenegro in its second qualifier in Aarhus, Denmark on Saturday.

This was the last chance for Denmark to keep its Olympic dream alive after losing to Romania 32-25 in its first qualifier on Friday.

The two teams were well-matched as the score was tied five times during the first 12 minutes. EURO 2012 champions Montenegro gained an upper hand with more fierce attacks in front of the net, enjoying a lead of 13-10 at half break.

In the second half, the Danes rallied from behind to tie 20-all with 11 minutes left. However, Montenegro managed for their 5-goal advantage with one minute remaining.

Earlier on Saturday, Romania recorded its second win, beating Uruguay 36-19.

The women's handball of Denmark used to enjoy a comfortable reign in the Olympic arena, winning three straight Olympic gold medals from 1996 to 2004. Endit
