AU condemns attack on Nigeria mosque

Xinhua, March 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

The African Union (AU) has condemned the suicide attack at a mosque in Nigeria.

Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the AU Commission, has strongly condemned the suicide attack on Wednesday at a mosque in the north-eastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, said an AU statement on Thursday.

The attack, carried out by two female suicide bombers, resulted in the death of 25 people. Terror group Boko Haram was suspected to be responsible for the attacks.

While commiserating with the government and people of Nigeria for the loss of life, the chairperson reiterated AU's continued commitment, through the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) established by the member states of the Lake Chad Basin Commission and Benin, to neutralize and eliminate the Boko Haram terrorist group, said the statement.

"The Chairperson noted with dismay that the terrorist attacks that Africa continues to experience are a stark reminder of the continued threat of terrorism on the continent," it said.

She stressed the need for enhanced efforts by AU member states, and also the wider international community, to combat the scourge, it added. Endit
