Germany closes consulate, school in Istanbul over security threat

Xinhua, March 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

Germany closed its consulate general and a high school in Istanbul on Thursday over security threat.

"After the warning of German consulate, Private German High School will be closed Thursday, for one day over security reasons," the school said in a statement on its website.

Both the consulate general and the high school are located around Taksim Square at the center of Istanbul.

German citizens were urged to stay away from the area, while the closures have reportedly triggered panic among the Turks.

Turkey has remained on high alert following a Sunday suicide car bombing attack in Ankara, the capital, in which 37 people were killed.

Istanbulites started to advise each other against traveling to the Taksim area over social media.

In January, 12 German tourists were killed in a suicide attack in Istanbul. Endit
