Tokyo stocks extended losses as investors jitters peak ahead of FOMC outcome

Tokyo stocks extended losses Wednesday as investors remained skittish ahead of the outcome of the U.S. Federal Reserve's two-day Federal Open Market Committee meeting later in the day with the yen's firmness also adding to jitters.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 142.62 points, or 0.83 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 16,974.45.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, finished the day 11.58 points, or 0.84 percent, lower at 1,360.50.

Notable decliners at the close of play comprised banking, iron and steel, and security-linked shares. The day's turnover was 1,911.8 billion yen. (16.86 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
