Five people were killed after a speeding truck rammed into a toll plaza in eastern Indian state of Kolkata, officials said Monday.

The speeding truck rammed into a toll plaza on Sunday night at the second Hooghly bridge in Kolkata city, capital of West Bengal.

"The truck mowed down three people, who were immediately shifted to hospital in a very critical condition but doctors in the hospital declared them brought dead," an official said.

"Later on when the truck was lifted with the help of a crane, two bodies were found in the debris of Plaza."

Reports said the driver and helper of the truck fled from the spot after the accident.
