Turkish military hits PKK targets in northern Iraq

Xinhua, March 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Turkey hit outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) targets in northern Iraq early Monday, the military said.

A total of 11 Turkish warplanes struck 18 PKK targets in Qandil and Gara regions in northern Iraq, the Turkish Armed Forces said in a statement.

The airstrike came after a suicide car bomb attack in Ankara on Sunday which killed at least 37 people.

The blast occurred near bus stops and set a number of vehicles on fire near Guven Park, a major transportation hub. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

On Feb. 17, a suicide car bomb targeted military shuttles in the capital city, killing at least 29 people and injuring 81 others.

The Kurdistan Freedom Hawks, a Kurdish militant group linked to the PKK, has claimed responsibility for that attack.

Since a cease-fire between the government and the PKK collapsed last July, Turkish security forces have been conducting a major campaign against the group in the southeast of the country.

More than 260 members of Turkish security forces and thousands of PKK members have been killed since then in confrontations inside Turkey and in northern Iraq. Endit
