Tan Cheng Bock to make second bid for Singapore's presidency

Xinhua, March 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tan Cheng Bock, candidate for Singapore's last presidential election in 2011, confirmed on Friday morning's press conference that he plans to contest the forthcoming presidential election.

Tan, the former MP for Singapore's ruling People's Action Party, hinted his intention to run for election in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

He said he owe his friends and supporters an answer as many asked if he intended to contest in the forthcoming election, which is due to be held by August next year.

His announcement comes amid a review of the Elected Presidency system in Singapore, which Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced in Parliament in January.

Tan gained over 738,000 votes in Singapore's presidential election in 2011. The incumbent President Tony Tan Keng Yam won the election with thin margin. Endit
