Bulgaria detains 43 illegal immigrants traveling from Turkey to Austria

Xinhua, March 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian police at the country's Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint detained a group of 43 illegal immigrants traveling on a train from Istanbul to Austria via Bulgaria and Romania, officials said Thursday.

The border guards spotted the foreigners Wednesday night on the last flatcar of a train entering from Turkey, the interior ministry said in a statement.

The people, including eight men, 11 women and 24 children, did not have any identity documents, but 28 said they were from Iraq and the others presented themselves as Syrian nationals, the ministry said.

The illegal immigrants confessed they had boarded the train at the station in Edirne, Turkey, according to the ministry.

According to official data, the ministry arrested 31,281 illegal immigrants in 2015, while the number in 2014 was 11,080. Endit
