Albania will work with Germany to ensure its judicial system is up to par in its application for EU membership, parliament Speaker Ilir Meta has said in a meeting with German lawmakers.
The two sides also agreed on the need to boost economic cooperation, the Albanian Daily News reported on Wednesday.
Receiving lawmakers from Germany's Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU), Meta said Albania has received support from Germany in strengthening the rule of law and in the fight against corruption and organized crime as well as improving economic governance.
"Albania relies strongly on Germany for its European future. The traditional interest of Bavaria, and that of the CSU for Albania is well-known," he said.
Meta was quoted as saying that judicial reform is an immediate necessity in Albania's efforts towards EU membership. It is expected to help improve the business climate to attract foreign investment.
Florian Hahn, spokesperson for the group of CSU lawmakers, said Germany will continue to have deep relations with Albania and will offer help in its bid for EU membership.
Albania has been an official candidate for accession to the EU since June 2014 and urged to speed up its reforms to achieve full membership. Endi
