Niger opposition withdraws from presidential run-off poll

Xinhua, March 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

Niger's opposition coalition on Tuesday said its candidate Hama Amadou would not contest the March 20 presidential run-off poll against incumbent President Mahamadou Issoufou, citing voting irregularities.

The coalition, COPA 2016, released a statement in the capital Niamey, denouncing alleged manoeuvres by the Constitutional Court and the National Independent Electoral Commission to "ensure Issoufou's re-election".

Their withdrawal came on the day designated for the run-off campaigns to start.

Issoufou took 48.8 percent of the vote while Amadou won 17.7 percent in the first round of the election held late last month. Endit
