Israeli soldiers kill Palestinian attacker in West Bank

Xinhua, March 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli troops after he tried to attack them, a military spokesperson said, in the sixth Palestinian attack over the past two days.

"An assailant armed with a knife attempted to stab forces at a checkpoint south of Qalqilya," said the spokesperson. The force fired at the suspect, resulting in his death, the spokesperson said.

This is the second attack on Wednesday morning. Earlier, two assailants were killed after perpetrating two consecutive shooting attacks in two separate places in Jerusalem, police said.

A spokesperson for the Israeli emergency service said that a man in his fifties was critically wounded, apparently by Israeli fire, as police were trying to take over the assailants. Medics said the victim may be a Palestinian from east Jerusalem.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said one of the assailants was an Israeli citizen and resident of east Jerusalem, and the other was a resident of the Palestinian village of 'Aqab outside Jerusalem.

The incidents were the latest in a spate of attacks amidst a visit by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.

On Tuesday, a U.S. tourist was killed and over a dozen of Israelis were injured in a slew of attacks, along with four dead Palestinian attackers, amid the arrival of Biden for a two-day visit to Israel.

The attacks came after a six-month long Palestinian uprising, with almost daily stabbing, shooting, and car-ramming attacks. It claimed the lives of at least 175 Palestinians and 28 Israelis, and shows no sign of abating.

Israel has been accusing the Palestinian Authority of fueling the violence with "incitement" against Israel while the Palestinians say it is the result of 49 years of Israeli occupation of their lands. Endit
