Saudi-led coalition welcomes border "calm" to reach political solution

Xinhua, March 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Saudi-led coalition against Houthis in Yemen welcomed on Wednesday the "calm" in Saudi-Yemeni border to reach political solution under the United Nations, local Al Arabiya news reported.

The coalition that has been engaged in a war in Yemen for almost a year attributes the state of calmness to the mediation of tribal and social personalities to give the chance for the entry of medical and humanitarian aids to the nearby Yemeni villages.

It also contributed to prisoner swap with Houthi militias, of which a Saudi soldier was exchanged with seven Yemenis who were arrested near the borders.

The Saudi-led coalition started daily air bombing on the Shiite Houthi rebels and their allied forces since March 2015, vowing to drive out the rebels and retrieve Sanaa, the capital.

Yemen has been mired in an all-out civil war since September 2014, when the Shiite Houthi group backed by forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh invaded the capital Sanaa and drove President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi into exile. The war has killed nearly 6,000 people. Endit
