Study shows New York airports most delayed in U.S.

A recent study shows three major airports in the New York City metropolitan area were the most delayed in the U.S. in 2015.

New York's John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and New Jersey's Newark Liberty airports ranked dead last among the 29 major airports for on-time arrival performance, with LaGuardia being the worst at 70.91 percent, according to Global Gateway Alliance, an airport watchdog group based in New York City.

When it came to overall on-time performance, LaGuardia and Newark again swept the bottom two spot with 72.79 percent and 75.01 percent respectively, while Kennedy ranked a bit higher at fourth from bottom.

A late flight is considered by the study to be any that arrives or departs more than 15 minutes beyond its scheduled time.

"These findings confirm what we've long known - New York's airports are the most delayed in the nation," Chairman of Global Gateway Alliance Joe Sitt said. "And it's only getting worse for millions of passengers."

More than 124 million people flew in and out of New York and New Jersey airports in 2015, which is an increase of a record 7 million in passenger traffic from 2014.

The study was conducted using the airline on-time statistics data published by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Endit
