Vietnam names new coach for men's national soccer squad

Xinhua, March 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Vietnamese Football Federation (VFF) signed a deal with Nguyen Huu Thang to coach its national soccer team here on Thursday.

Thang, born in 1971, replaces Japanese Toshiya Miura whose contract was terminated late January following Vietnam's poor performance at the 2016 AFC U23 Championship in Qatar.

For a two-year tenure, Thang will guide Vietnam in two qualifiers of the World Cup 2018, first against Chinese Taipei on March 24, then Iraq on March 29.

The Vietnamese players will gather in Hanoi on March 14 to tune up for the qualifiers.

Thang who started working as head coach of a Vietnamese club since 2009, was assessed as one of the best players of Vietnamese national team during the 1990s, the VFF said on its website. Endit
