Xinhua, March 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

The seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade in January increased by 0.4 percent month-on-month in the 19-country euro area and by 0.8 percent in the wider European Union (EU), according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU.

In December, retail trade rose by 0.6 percent in the euro area and by 0.3 percent in the 28-country EU block.

Compared with the same month last year, the January adjusted retail sales index increased by 2 percent in the euro area and by 2.8 percent in the EU.

Eurostat said the 0.4 percent increase is due to rises of 0.7 percent for non-food products, of 0.5 percent for food, drinks and tobacco, and of 0.1 percent for automotive fuel.

By monthly comparison, among member states, the highest increases were registered in Portugal at 5.9 percent, while the largest decreases were observed in Luxembourg at minus 1.2 percent. Endit
