Tokyo stocks gain in morning on U.S. economic data, Wall Street's advance

Tokyo stocks extended gains Thursday morning as economic data reinstalling faith in the health of the U.S. economy, coupled with a strong showing on Wall Street overnight, buoyed the market mood.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 148.53 points, or 0.89 percent, from Wednesday to 16,895.08.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 14.54 points, or 1.08 percent, to 1,364.15.

Notable advancers by the break comprised banking, marine transportation, and mining-linked stocks. Endit
