New Zealand backs UN sanctions against DPRK

The New Zealand government Thursday welcomed the adoption of a United Nations Security Council resolution imposing tougher sanctions on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

"New Zealand has already condemned North Korea (DPRK)'s recent nuclear test and long-range rocket launch," Foreign Minister Murray McCully said in a statement.

"North Korea (DPRK)'s actions blatantly contravene previous Security Council resolutions and stand in direct opposition to international opinion," said McCully.

"New Zealand supports the new sanctions which have been adopted and we hope they will convince North Korea (DPRK) to cease its provocative behavior and return to talks on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," he said.

"The Security Council Resolution strengthens existing sanctions on North Korea (DPRK) covering weapons of mass destruction, arms and luxury goods, and imposes new economic measures affecting transport, banking and trade," he added.

The New Zealand government would continue to urge the DPRK to refrain from actions that undermined stability in the region and would be taking steps to implement the resolution. Endit
