U.S. most populous county to hire sustainability czar

Xinhua, March 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

The governing body of the most populous county in the United States voted Wednesday to hire a point man to coordinate environmental and sustainable development efforts.

According to local media, the chief sustainability officer of the Los Angeles County will be tasked with setting new, more aggressive goals for sustainability issues and creating incentives to reach them.

The new officer will be responsible for harmonizing the efforts of 37 departments and the existing Sustainability Council of the county, which has a population of over 10 million, say reports.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti welcomed the move, saying in a statement that the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors "is taking a great step forward."

"It is a critical position to not only help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat the effects of climate change, it can also improve housing, create green jobs, and support environmental justice," he added. Endi
