UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday welcomed the UN Security Council's unanimous adoption of a resolution that imposes sanctions on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to curb the country's nuclear and missile programs.
"The secretary-general welcomes the adoption of today's resolution 2270 (2016) in response to the recent nuclear test and launch using ballistic missile technology" by the DPRK, said a statement issued here by Ban's spokesman.
"Today's unanimous action by the Security Council has sent a clear message that the DPRK must return to full compliance with its international obligations," the statement said.
"The secretary-general urges the DPRK to abide by the resolution and calls upon all member states to ensure its implementation," the statement said.
The 15-nation UN council adopted the resolution that imposes new and tougher sanctions against the DPRK in a bid to curb Pyongyang's efforts to further develop its nuclear and missile programs.
The move is a response to the DPRK's Jan. 6 nuclear test and Feb. 7 satellite launch. The previous council resolutions prohibit the DPRK from test-firing any rocket based on ballistic missile technology or conducting any nuclear activity.
"This firm response by the Security Council should put an end to the cycle of provocation and lead to the resumption of dialogue in accordance with the unified view of the international community," said the statement.
The secretary-general reaffirms his commitment to working with all sides to reduce tensions and achieve the verifiable denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, it said.
"The secretary-general reiterates the critical role of international assistance in safeguarding the lives of millions in the country," the statement said.
"At the same time, the Secretary-General renews his call on the DPRK to do more for the lives of its people," it said. "Genuine improvement in human rights is a necessary basis for long-term security and stability." Enditem
