Lebanon fails again to elect president

Xinhua, March 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Lebanon failed again on Wednesday to elect a president due to lack of the constitutionally required quorum.

According to the constitution, the required quorum is two thirds of the 128-seat parliament.

Only 72 lawmakers, including Mustaqbal Movement leader former prime minister Saad Hariri, showed up.

Speaker Nabih Berri scheduled a new session for March 23.

Under a national power sharing pact, the president should be a Christian Maronite, the speaker a Shiite Muslim and the prime minister a Sunni Muslim.

Lebanon has been without a president since the term of Michel Suleiman ended on May 2014 without the election of a successor due to ongoing disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps. Endit
