Public should remain vigilant although no tsunami threat yet: Maldives

Xinhua, March 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Maldives on Wednesday said although there was no immediate threat of a tsunami following the massive earthquake in Sumatra, the public should remain vigilant.

"No indication of elevated sea levels at any part of the Maldives so far," the Maldives Met Department said but Defence Minister, Adam Shareef said the public should exercise caution.

Thousands of people were killed as massive tsunami waves struck countries along the Indian Ocean in December 2004, generated by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake in the offshore of northern Sumatra.

The countries worst affected were Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives and Somalia. Endit
