Angola assumes rotating UN Security Council presidency for March

Xinhua, March 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Angola on Tuesday assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for March.

Ismael Abraao Gaspar Martins, permanent representative of Angola, took over the rotating council presidency from his Venezuelan counterpart Rafael Dario Ramirez Carreno, who held the council presidency for February.

On Wednesday, UN Security Council is expected to adopt a resolution to impose sanctions on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to curb the country's nuclear program. The United States circulated the draft resolution to the 15-nation Council last week.

Under the UN Charter, the Security Council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of peace and security in the world at large.

The Council is composed of five permanent members -- China, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Russian Federation -- and 10 non-permanent members that are elected in groups of five, with a tenure of two years on the Council.

The presidency of the Council rotates among its 15 member states based on the English-language alphabetical order of the countries' names on a monthly basis. Enditem
