Jordanian special forces on Tuesday exchanged fire with several armed outlaws in the northern governorate of Irbid, killing and injuring many, the state-run Petra news agency reported.
The outlaws were hiding in several houses in Irbid, which is close to the borders with Syria, said the report, quoting the police as saying that three security personnel were injured.
"I heard a heavy exchange of fire in the central part of the city of Irbid near the market area. Some opened fire at the security forces and an exchange of fire took place," a local resident told Xinhua over the phone Tuesday.
"We do not know what is going on. Police closed many roads leading to the central part of the city and security forces are heavily deployed," the resident, who asked not to be named, said Tuesday.
Being close to the borders with Syrian, the governorate of Irbid is home to hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and many of its towns and villages suffered from stray shells coming from the Syrian territories. Enditem
