Most Greeks not satisfied with policies on economy, refugee crisis: surveys

Xinhua, February 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

The overwhelming majority of Greeks was not satisfied with the government's handling of the economic crisis and the refugee crisis, requesting change of course, according to a series of opinion surveys released recently in Athens.

Only four out of 10 respondents viewed positively the government's response to the refugee crisis in a poll conducted by Public Issue polling for Sunday's Vima (Tribune) newspaper, as well as a survey carried out by Metron Analysis for "Parapolitika" (Behind the scenes) daily.

In addition, 85 percent of respondents said that Greece is heading towards the wrong direction, and 70 percent gave a negative mark to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on his overall governing style, according to the Metron Analysis poll.

Voters' disgruntlement with the Left-led ruling coalition has benefited the main opposition party, according to the surveys.

The conservative New Democracy now leads with 23.7 percent and the Radical Left SYRIZA party of Tsipras follows with 19.4 percent, according to the Metron Analysis poll.

In another survey conducted by the University of Macedonia in northern Greece for SKAI television the two parties receive respectively 24 percent and 17.5 percent of votes.

Four out of 10 Greeks according to SKAI's survey and six out of 10 according to Metron Analysis would like to see the formation of a new unity government from the current parliament to avoid new snap general elections.

The new cross-party ruling coalition should not be led by Tsipras and should guarantee Greece's stay in the euro zone and Schengen, according to the 60 percent of respondents in the Metron Analysis opinion poll.

Three out of 10 Greeks who had voted SYRIZA in the elections over the past year are also disappointed with the government's stance, according to a survey of ProRata published in "Efimerida ton Syntakton" (Editors' Newspaper).

According to this poll, 64 percent of Greeks believed that the government does not implement efficiently the needed reforms to address the debt crisis. Endit
