Austria not reaching daily limits on asylum seeker numbers: state police

Xinhua, February 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Austrian authorities have not reached their daily cap for asylum applications and transitory migrants at its southern border so far, state police in Styria said Friday.

Since the daily limit of 80 asylum applications and 3,200 transitory migrants was implemented Friday last week, 2,247 migrants entered via the Spielfeld border crossing site, according to a report by the APA news agency.

Of these 83 submitted an asylum application, while a further 1,999 traveled onward to Germany. Austria rejected entry for 165 people sending them back across the border to Slovenia, while Germany similarly sent 162 persons back to Austria.

On Friday last week, as well as Tuesday and Wednesday, no arrivals were recorded at the Spielfeld site at all, while the largest number of 787 migrants arrived on Sunday.

Authorities said 840 migrants are also expected to arrive via Slovenia on Friday. Endit
