Dortmund have extended the contract of Sven Bender, the Bundesliga runner-up confirmed on Tuesday.

The eight-time German champions agreed on a contract extension ahead of schedule with defensive midfielder Sven Bender, who penned an extension until June 2021.

"Sven pairs in his game thoroughgoingness and fairness. He is for many years a valuable cornerstone of our team," Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorc told the club's official homepage.

The 26-year-old midfielder joined the "Schwarz-Gelben" in 2009 from second division outfit TSV 1860 Munich to score four goals in 143 appearances ever since. The German international lifted five titles with the "BVB" , including the German domestic double in 2012.

"I thank Hans-Joachim Watzke, Michael Zorc and Thomas Tuchel for the trust they placed in me. I am extremely happy to wear the black and yellow jersey also in the future," Bender said.
