Nigerien poll body starts releasing provisional election results

Niger's National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) on Monday evening began releasing provisional results of Sunday's first round of the presidential elections that were held jointly with the legislative elections.

The results were mostly from diaspora polling stations and cannot be used at the moment to gauge the trend.

The process of releasing results was expected to continue throughout the night and Tuesday.And the overall provisional results will be known by Wednesday evening, according to CENI president Boube Ibrahim.

Fifteen candidates, including incumbent President Mahamadou Issoufou, contested in the first round of the presidential elections.

Voting also continued on Monday in some regions where polling stations did not open on Sunday. The concerned regions were Zinder, Maradi, Tahoua, Agadez and Tillabery. Enditem
