1st LD Writethru: 10 killed, 150 injured in riots in N. Indian state so far: police

Xinhua, February 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least 10 people have been killed and 150 injured as protests by the Jat community in the northern Indian state Haryana demanding Other Backward Classes (OBC) status entered the eighth day on Sunday, said police.

The state's Director General of Police (DGP) Y.P. Singhal told the media that the violence in the worst-affected districts of Rohtak, Bhiwani and Jhajjar had been put under control since Saturday night.

"As per reports, 10 people have been killed and nearly 150 are injured. No death has been reported since last (Saturday) night, either in police action or in rioting," he said.

The agitation has paralysed life in the entire state, cutting off all northern states from the nearby capital.

Trains and buses to and from Delhi and other places have been cancelled. All major highways passing through Haryana have been blocked by protestors at several places.

The government said it would negotiate with the Jat community leaders on their demand for OBC status. Endit
