Austria planning further reductions to asylum seeker intake limit

Xinhua, February 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner announced further planned reductions to the asylum seeker intake limits imposed on Friday.

From 8 a.m. Friday, a daily maximum of 80 asylum applications will be accepted at the southern border along with a maximum of 3,200 transit migrants wishing to travel elsewhere in Europe.

Mikl-Leitner told the Austria Press Agency in a statement that the daily upper limits would in due course "have to be lowered further."

She noted this would be structured and communicated with neighboring countries. In particular, initial efforts will be made to ensure Balkan countries are not overburdened with a large backlog of migrants.

"We must not work against each other, but rather apply the brakes together," she said.

It is important each country along the Balkans migrant route applies more restrictive measures at their respective borders, she added. Endit
