More than 90% of Beijing's grain supply produced elsewhere

Xinhua, February 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

More than 90 percent of Beijing's grain supply in 2015 was provided by other provinces or imported from foreign countries, local authorities said on Friday.

Beijing's grain output totaled 610,000 tonnes last year, while its grain consumption was estimated to be 5.9 million tonnes, meaning 5.29 million tonnes of grain came from outside the city, said Li Guanglu, director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Grain.

It is expected that the capital's grain consumption will reach 6.3 million tonnes by 2020, when its grain output will decrease to 500,000 tonnes, Li added.

Beijing has 244 grain bases in other provinces, providing more than six million tonnes of grain yearly over the past five years.

To ensure the food security of the capital, Beijing will adjust its grain industrial distribution and boost construction of logistics centers and grain bases in other provinces, especially in neighboring Tianjin Municipality and Hebei Province, which is one of China's major grain-producing areas.

A Beijing-centered four-hour grain supply logistics network will also be built over the next five years to improve infrastructure for the city's grain supply and its emergency grain supply capacity, according to Li. Endi
