UN chief to make official visit to Burundi on Feb. 22

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is expected to make an official visit to Burundi between Feb. 22 and 23, UN sources in the Burundi capital said Thursday.

According to the sources, Ban, who will be visiting the country as part of his tour of the Great Lakes region, will arrive in Bujumbura on Monday evening, after which he will hold talks with President Pierre Nkurunziza.

The UN secretary general will end his visit to Burundi on Tuesday morning after addressing a press conference to give updates on his assessment of the situation in the country.

Burundi is facing a political crisis that began in April 2015 after the ruling party endorsed Nkurunziza to contest for last year's presidential elections.

However, the opposition rejected his candidature, noting that it violated the Arusha Accord for Peace and Reconciliation in Burundi, signed in 2000.

Since then, the international community has been urging the protagonists to find a lasting solution to the crisis through dialogue. Endit
