Karadzic to hear judgment on March 24

The judgement in the case against former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic is to be handed down on March 24, the trial chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) stated on Thursday.

The judgment will mark the end of what was a lengthy trial in The Hague. The closing arguments of the parties were heard between Sept. 29 and Oct. 7, 2014 and afterwards the chamber withdrew for deliberations. The prosecution called for a life sentence for Karadzic.

The 70-year-old Karadzic, former president of the Republika Srpska, is charged with genocide, crimes against humanity, and violations of the laws or customs of war during the Bosnian war between 1992 and 1995.

Karadzic was captured in Belgrade, Serbia in July 2008, after more than 13 years evading arrest, and transferred to the tribunal's custody a few days later. His trial commenced in October 2009. Endit
