Police chiefs from Austria, Slovenia, Serbia, Macedonia and Croatia on Thursday agreed to jointly profile and register refugees at the Macedonian-Greece border and organize transport sending refugees directly to Austria from the border of Macedonia.
At a meeting here, the police chiefs agreed their officers would work together to identify and take data from the migrants as of Thursday. They will also determine whether the migrants come from war-torn countries such as Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan.
"We have agreed to profile and register migrants in Macedonia and organize their transport," Vlado Dominic, Croatian chief of police, said at a news conference after the meeting.
The police leaders agreed to invite Bulgaria and Albania to join their efforts, because the two countries could become a new route for migrants on their way heading to their final destination in Europe, mainly Germany.
Dominic said he and his counterparts did not agree quotas regarding how many refugees each country would let in.
On Wednesday, Austria said it would receive 80 asylum applications a day and would also allow only 3,200 migrants to travel through to other countries. Endit
