Infighting among Afghan Taliban claims 28 lives: Local media

Xinhua, February 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Infighting among supporters and opponents of Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansoor have claimed lives of 28 militants in the eastern Ghazni province over the past three days, local media reported on Thursday.

"Since eruption of fighting between supporters of Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansoor and his rival Mullah Mohammad Rasoul three days ago in Nawa district of Ghazni province, 28 militants from both sides have been killed," Tolo television reported in its news bulletin, quoting Ghazni police chief Aminullah Omarkhil.

Mullah Rasoul has rejected Mullah Mansoor as the new leader and announced Jihad (holy war) against him, according to the source.

Taliban outfit has yet to make comment.

Since confirmation of the death of Taliban former leader Mullah Mohammad Omar in July last year, the fragmented armed group has faced infighting between Mansoor's supporters and his opponents in several provinces of the conflict-wracked Afghanistan. Enditem
