Austria willing to send troops to Macedonian border to control migrants influx: Defense Minister

Xinhua, February 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Austrian Minister of Defense Hans Peter Doskozil on Friday reiterated Austria was willing to send troops to Macedonia to aid in border protection measures.

"We can no longer wait for a solution from the EU, and must implement border security measures both domestically as well as along the Balkans route," Austria Press Agency quoted the minister as saying.

He said a more tightly controlled border in Macedonia would provide relief at the southern Austrian border and decelerate the influx of migrants overall.

Doskozil added, however, the issue must be discussed intensively with Macedonia, to explore what kind of help, if any, is required.

To this effect, Austrian Foreign Affairs Minister Sebastian Kurz visited Macedonia this week, and held talks with Macedonian leaders at the ongoing Munich Security Conference on Friday. Endit
