US senators praise Serbia's handling of migration crisis

A delegation of U.S. senators led by John McCain on Friday praised Serbia's government for its handling of the migrant crisis on its territory.

"We appreciate how these refugees are cared for -- the medicine, food, transit. I think Serbian people can be proud of their government in handling the refugee crisis," McCain said at a press conference after visiting a temporary shelter in the village of Adasevci, where some 1,000 people wait daily to be transported across the Croatian border.

McCain said he would request the United States to provide additional assistance to Serbia in handling the refugee crisis.

For his part, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said: "Serbia is the only country that saw no incidents, and was not forced to use tear gas against migrants."

"Serbia will build no fences, as this is not a European solution nor it is a civilized one. But Serbia cannot economically withstand becoming a permanent station for these migrants, or to receive tens or hundreds of thousands of people because we don't have the necessary economic power," he added.
