Ukraine unveils measures to boost energy efficiency

Xinhua, February 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ukraine will implement a series of reform measures aimed at boosting its energy efficiency in 2016, Deputy Prime Minister Gennady Zubko said here on Friday.

"We will strengthen our efforts in carrying out energy --saving activities, modernizing public utility services and improving heat insulation of residential buildings and social facilities," Zubko said when meeting with foreign diplomats and representatives of international organizations.

Besides, in 2016, Kiev will set up the Energy Efficiency Fund to attract investment from international financial organizations in developing energy-saving projects in Ukraine, Zubko said.

"The Energy Efficiency Fund is a tool that would allow us to take a more rational approach to financing energy efficiency projects and supporting vulnerable groups," he said.

Ukraine, which uses three times more energy per person than the average European Union member state, is struggling to cut its dependence on energy resources, of which around 40 percent are supplied from abroad.

According to the government estimates, the East European nation needs at least 2 billion U.S. dollars in investment per year to boost its energy efficiency. Endit
