Kenya's Yego eyes Ostrava for golden spike meet

Xinhua, February 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Olympics are six months away and Javelin World champion Julius Yego has said his first major competition this year will be at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in the Czech Republic in May.

Yego said he will compete in few meetings before the Olympics to avoid burning out and Ostrava competition, which is part IAAF World Challenge, will be the first stop for him in the build-up that will culminate with the Rio Olympic Games.

"I have to be careful on where to compete and how often. This is an Olympic year and I have to compete sparingly," he said Friday in Nairobi.

The Kenyan thrower will be back to the place where he started last season. Yego will come up against his training partner and World silver medalist Ihab Abdelrahman of Egypt.

The two athletes are heading to Potchefstroom in South Africa for their two month training camp. They will then go to the Czech city to meet Jan Zelezny, the last to throw over 90 at the meet back in 1997.

Now Yego says it might be possible this year to hurl the javelin beyond that mark.

"My super summer 2015 started in Ostrava and I beat lot of good throwers. It was a special moment to get the trophy from Jan Zelezny. Now I am coming back to Ostrava as a World Champion. I am sure we will see more 90m throws during the coming competition than in 2015," he said. Endit
