Ex-Brazil striker Fred banned for punching opponent

Former Brazil international striker Fred has been banned for five matches for punching an opponent.

The 32-year-old was found guilty by a disciplinary committee of striking Atletico Paranaense defender Leo in the head during a Primeira Liga match on January 27.

Both players were sent off for the incident, which occurred late in the match at Volta Redonda, which Atletico won 1-0.

Fluminense vice-president Mario Bittencourt said Thursday the Rio de Janeiro club would appeal the decision.

Capped 39 times for Brazil, Fred has not represented the Selecao since their 7-1 World Cup semifinal loss to Germany in 2014. Endit
