Former Australian Test cricket captain Steve Waugh has refused to buy in to an ugly slanging match with former teammate Shane Warne, after the "spin king" labelled him the "most selfish cricketer I've ever played with".
Warne launched the scathing attack on Waugh while appearing on reality television show "I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here".
In an episode that aired on late on Tuesday night, Warne detailed his deep dislike for Waugh, who led Australia to 41 victories in his 57 Tests as captain.
He said there were "a lot of reasons" why he didn't get along with Waugh, even though they were teammates for more than a decade and Warne was Waugh's vice-captain for much of that time.
Those reasons included the manner in which he was axed by Waugh from the Test side in the West Indies in 1999, but also the way in which the New South Welshman went about his cricket.
"I don't like Steve Waugh ... (one of them is) because he's the most selfish cricketer I've played with," Warne said.
However, on Wednesday, Waugh, who sits the ninth for most centuries in Test history, opted not to fire a retort back at the opinionated cricket legend turned celebrity and media pundit.
"I'm not justifying his comments with an answer," Waugh said in a very brief statement on Wednesday.
On national television, Warne revealed their troubled relationship hit rock bottom after the leg-spinner was ingloriously dumped from the Australian Test team while on tour in the Caribbean in 1999.
While Warne admitted he hadn't performed up to his usual standards, which would ultimately net the Victorian a then-world record 708 Test scalps, in the previous Test, he felt hurt by the manner he was treated by Waugh.
Warne has had a notoriously frosty relationship with several past members of the Australian Test team, including wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist and former coach John Buchanan. Endit
