Atletico extend contract of goalkeeper Jan Oblak

Xinhua, February 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

Atletico Madrid announced on Tuesday that they have reached agreement with Slovenian international goalkeeper Jan Oblak to extend his contract until the end of June 2021.

The 23-year-old joined Atletico in the summer of 2014 with a deal until June 2015 and had to await his turn before becoming first choice keeper for coach Diego Pablo Simeone. However, he got his chance after Miguel Angel Moya damaged his thigh playing against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League in March 2015.

Oblak replaced the injured Moya and was an instant hero as Atletico qualified for the quarter-finals of the competition thanks partly to his saves in a penalty shoot-out.

He has been a first team regular all season and at the moment has the best record in the BBVA Primera Liga having conceded just 11 goals all campaign as Atletico sit second in the table behind FC Barcelona.

He has only conceded three goals in six Champions League games this time around and has a total of 18 clean sheets in his 29 official appearances this campaign. Endit
